A fabulous piece of Georgian mourning jewellery with black and white enamel on 18ct gold.
The ring features the inscription “Isaac Hollings”, with the traditional Georgian mourning symbolism and the Latin abbreviation “OB”, meaning Obiit (“died”). “AE” indicates the age of the deceased - in this case, 57.
The white enamel borders traditionally indicated that the deceased was unmarried or very young. These pieces were especially popular during the Georgian period and were often made bespoke shortly after a loved one’s passing as a heartfelt tribute to their memory. Many Georgian survivals lack hallmarks, so this ring’s complete set of hallmarks is exceptionally rare for the era.
