Keep Your Jewellery Looking Their Best!
Antique jewellery is incredibly beautiful, but because of its age it is often more delicate, so it needs a little extra TLC.
Please take care when cleaning your items, the patina of the jewellery has developed over time - the lovely colour can be preserved by using soft cloths and very gently polishing them. I wouldn’t recommend using any solutions as this can often remove that lovely colour. Warm water on a damp cloth is often enough to remove dust and keep your items looking beautiful.
Electronic cleaners are ok for most jewellery - but for delicate and fine jewellery pieces you will find gentler methods will work just as well without harming your pieces.
Showering with your jewellery is not recommended, especially for more intricate and delicate items. Perfumes, lotions and soaps often contain harsh chemicals and salts that can slowly weaken settings, dull the finish and strip protective coatings, eventually damaging both metal and gems. Repeated exposure to heat, steam and water can also loosen stones and promote corrosion. To keep your pieces looking their best, it’s wise to remove your jewellery beforehand, gently dry and clean it when needed, and store it in a safe, dry place away from direct sunlight and humidity.
Some items have stone settings which overtime should be assessed by a professional jeweller to ensure clasps are still in good order.
Keep jewellery in separate soft velvet pouches so each piece is protected and won’t scratch or tangle with the others.
If you're hesitant about cleaning your jewellery yourself, I would recommend taking your item to an antique jewellery shop that specialises in jewellery maintenance.
These are just simple tips to keep your beauties looking their best - they have endured decades of use so please enjoy them and preserve them to continue their stories.
